Statement of problem
The economic feasibility of processes using activated carbon for treatment of water and waste water is contingent upon re-use of the carbon in multiple adsorptionregeneration cycle. Activated carbon has been used in treating waste water due to its known high adsorptive capacity over various solutes, but after activated carbon has reached its uptake capacity, it must either be disposed off and replaced with fresh carbon or be regenerated. The relative high cost of activated carbon, and the fact that disposal of spent activated via landfills or incineration adds pollutants to the environment, mandates serious consideration of carbon regeneration. Carbon regeneration saves cost and helps to solve the associated environmental problem. 4 Some researchers have studied regeneration of spent carbon using microwave, conventional and chemical methos, it is still not clear which method offers clear advantages over another.
